Obama’s Prayer

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Reportedly a young student removed the Senator’s prayer from the Western Wall shortly after Obama left the holy site. Then the prayer was turned over to the local media, who chose to publish it.

Obama at Western Wall

You don’t have to be a Hebrew or a Christian or a Muslim for these images to stir complex emotions. As a wise friend of mine recently said to me, “History usually dawns on us after the fact; we are not used to looking it right in the face, and knowing that we are doing so.”

Bill Maher’s New Film

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

If there’s one thing Bill Maher and I disagree on, and there is, it is the importance that faith plays in the life of some believers. That being said, Maher is about as close as it gets to the ideal fusion of humor and honesty. Though I think Bill can tend towards a closed mind on maters of the spirit, I give him the benefit of the doubt to have done some thoughtful, sociologically relevant, and hilarious work in his new film.

Obama or Osama

Rachel Maddow Next in Line to Host Her Own Show on MSNBC

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

As has been pointed out before on A New Day Post and else where, Rachel Maddow is one of the most honest and informative commentators in the media period. When she began appearing as a foil for Tucker Carlson one his short lived show on MSNBC it gave many a reason to tune in. Soon enough the Air America host was filling in for a vacationing Keith Olbermann on countdown. Now the New York Times reports that Maddow is next in line to get her shot at her own show on the cable news network. Congratulations to Rachel Maddow and to MSNBC for this promising development. I say with out equivocation that Ms. Maddow can be trusted to look out for the American people, you remember that job every journalist is supposed to be doing.

New Yorker Cover

It’s hard to believe that a publication as respected as the New Yorker would allow something like this to take place. In looking at the controversial cover and listening to the back and forth in the media over the issue, I kept asking myself how many people had to have signed off on this before it went to print. How many experts, how man people with experience, how many editors, thought this was appropriate? The answer: enough, enough for this piece of “satire” to grace the cover of the New Yorker.

Drudge headline “Obama: bin Laden…”

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The full title of the story was “Obama: bin Laden still free because of GOP”. In fairness to Drudge the author of the piece, the associated press’s Nedra Pickler used this title as well. Obama’s comments on the subject are important and shine light on a seldom spoken truth; the republican conceived war on terror has failed to bring America’s greatest enemy to justice. This is the debate that democrats have been to afraid to have for the last seven years, but it is the right one for the nation. In that spirit one has to commend Drudge for covering it, on the other hand, it is probably never a good idea to have the words “Obama: bin Laden” right underneath a huge picture of the Senator.

Tim Russert Mourned By His Employers, Colleges, Nation

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Tim Russert, moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, has died at the age of 58 of a massive heart attack, and now the face of American political journalism reluctantly changes. As has been often noted as word of the sad news spread across the country, Meet the Press is the longest running show on television, and Russert the definition of professionalism, preparedness, and fairness. While No replacement has yet been named expectations are that NBC will look within its ranks for a new moderator, bringing names like Chuck Todd, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, and Chris Matthews to the for front of insider speculation.

Chuck Todd’s General Election Math

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

If you look at the map and listen to Todd, an Obama landslide is possible, if the African American voters and young voters and independent voters show up like some think they will. To see if that is happening one has to keep an eye on states like Missouri, Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

MSNBC Launches New Countdown Site

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

There a term in evolution that describes what is happening with Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann, where animals of different areas biologically, adapt to look or act like each other because of similar environmental factors. Stewart is a smart funny man and Olbermann is a funny smart man. Though their respective origins are different the political news landscape they share, uniquely pregnant with irony, has shaped their shows into similar beasts.

Who Will Be Obama’s VP

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

It was announced on Wednesday that Caroline Kennedy, Daughter of J.F.K., will be one of three people who are heading up the search for Obama’s VP. This reminded me that when G.W.B. was the republican “presumptive nominee’ back in 2000, he put former Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney in charge of finding a VP, he would of course eventually suggest himself.

Despite the buzz, Hillary Clinton seems a very unlikely choice because of Bill Clinton if for no other reason. As big of a figure as Obama is, even he could find himself being overshadowed by the former president, whose political judgment seems to be past it’s prime, and who has shown himself this primary season to be impossible for even his wife to control.

Look for someone with executive experience, so a governor is better than a legislator, since being governor is like being the president of your state. When you’re running against John McCain having someone with military experience could sure help. Also given Hillary Clinton’s historic campaign and the left over rifts in the “traditional democratic alliance”, maybe Obama should consider a Woman for VP. Also the Obama team has to think about swing states, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, someone from these states could tip the election his way. Along with all of that you have to think about the well healed notion of a balanced ticket, so if you are from Chicago (/Hawaii/Indonesia/Kenya/Kansas) then having a southerner would make a lot of since.  Now it might be true that no single person can satisfy all of those needs but you can be sure whoever is chosen will address some of these issues.

Here are the names I would look at: Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, who was the Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, Gen. Wesley Clark, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, or perhaps Clinton supporter Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh who is the former Indian Gov. Rounding out the conventional wisdoms short list are Former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, and Penn Gov. Ed Rendell who also supported Clinton.

Then there are those  who are less likely but who are my personal dream picks: former Sen. minority leader South Dakota’s Tom Daschle, who served three years as an intelligence officer in the Air Force Strategic Air Command, or the Senator from Delaware Joe Biden. But maybe the most interesting option, the anti-war retiring republican Senator from Nebraska, Chuck Hagel who is a Vietnam War veteran.
