I couldn’t disagree with you more…

In his new book, the widely respected Ron Suskind charges that in run up to the war in Iraq, the Bush Administration ordered the CIA to forge a document that would support the claim that there was a connection between the al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein’s Government. If this is true, and there is every reason to believe that it is, then the smoking gun that justifies the impeachment of George W Bush and Dick Cheney may have just turned up.

If you are one of the growing army of people who have contributed to the Obama campaign over the past months, and wonder where all that money is going, here is your answer. The Obama campaign has chosen to invest primarily in people, rather than yard signs and TV adds. Now the Paid staff is the largest ever assembled, and offices are being open in parts of the country that no democrat in resent memory has competed in. Is this a revolutionary strategy or a waste of resources? Only time will tell, but if past performance is any indicator, the Illinois Senator’s Campaign has already won a hotly contested primary fight, and moved out in front of his opponent in many of the traditional swing states, forcing the McCain to make difficult choices about how to spend his limited resources.

          So this is the guy who rides around on something called the “straight talk express”. This is from a man who promised a different kind of campaign; one that on the issues and on substance.
          It seems that the McCain camp has decided that they cannot win this election on the issues. They have decided, along with a majority of the punditry, that with the republican brand so badly damaged by the Bush years, the 2008 election has become a referendum on Barack Obama. If people decide that he is a regular democrat who drinks water and breaths air he will walk to an electoral triumph. The only path to victory for McCain involves a series of Obama stumbles or else some dirty campaigning that convinces Americans in mass that Obama is too risky or fundamentally unlike the rest of us, un-American.
           It’s an all or nothing approach because this type of attack undercuts McCain’s own image as a different kind of politician. It is telling, I believe, that the McCain camp has gone to this strategy so early. The window to define Obama in the public eye closes more and more each passing day.

The full title of the story was “Obama: bin Laden still free because of GOP”. In fairness to Drudge the author of the piece, the associated press’s Nedra Pickler used this title as well. Obama’s comments on the subject are important and shine light on a seldom spoken truth; the republican conceived war on terror has failed to bring America’s greatest enemy to justice. This is the debate that democrats have been to afraid to have for the last seven years, but it is the right one for the nation. In that spirit one has to commend Drudge for covering it, on the other hand, it is probably never a good idea to have the words “Obama: bin Laden” right underneath a huge picture of the Senator.

If you look at the map and listen to Todd, an Obama landslide is possible, if the African American voters and young voters and independent voters show up like some think they will. To see if that is happening one has to keep an eye on states like Missouri, Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

For some months Sen. Obama has been challenged to explain what he and his followers mean by change, with the nominating now secure the process of answering that question seems to have begun in earnest. This primary season Obama has already changed the way people look at campaign finance, out pacing the establishment backed Clinton brand with seas of new participants and small 20$ or 30$ donations, rather than from lobbyist and special interests groups and huge corporations. Now in the opening days of his tenure as the leader of the Democratic Party, Obama is sending the clearest of signals about how he plans to proceed. With party chairman Howard Dean’s approval Obama announced on Thursday that the Democratic Party will no longer accept donations from Washington lobbyist. This stance is in clear contrast to the McCain camps approach, which is largely composed of lobbyist.

           It was announced on Wednesday that Caroline Kennedy, Daughter of J.F.K., will be one of three people who are heading up the search for Obama’s VP. This reminded me that when G.W.B. was the republican “presumptive nominee’ back in 2000, he put former Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney in charge of finding a VP, he would of course eventually suggest himself.

            Despite the buzz, Hillary Clinton seems a very unlikely choice because of Bill Clinton if for no other reason. As big of a figure as Obama is, even he could find himself being overshadowed by the former president, whose political judgment seems to be past it’s prime, and who has shown himself this primary season to be impossible for even his wife to control.

            Look for someone with executive experience, so a governor is better than a legislator, since being governor is like being the president of your state. When you’re running against John McCain having someone with military experience could sure help. Also given Hillary Clinton’s historic campaign and the left over rifts in the “traditional democratic alliance”, maybe Obama should consider a Woman for VP. Also the Obama team has to think about swing states, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, someone from these states could tip the election his way. Along with all of that you have to think about the well healed notion of a balanced ticket, so if you are from Chicago (/Hawaii/Indonesia/Kenya/Kansas) then having a southerner would make a lot of since.  Now it might be true that no single person can satisfy all of those needs but you can be sure whoever is chosen will address some of these issues.

            Here are the names I would look at: Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, who was the Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, Gen. Wesley Clark, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, or perhaps Clinton supporter Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh who is the former Indian Gov. Rounding out the conventional wisdoms short list are Former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, and Penn Gov. Ed Rendell who also supported Clinton.

            Then there are those  who are less likely but who are my personal dream picks: former Sen. minority leader South Dakota’s Tom Daschle, who served three years as an intelligence officer in the Air Force Strategic Air Command, or the Senator from Delaware Joe Biden. But maybe the most interesting option, the anti-war retiring republican Senator from Nebraska, Chuck Hagel who is a Vietnam War veteran.

It’s important to remember while you watch this, that those compellations of Bush gaffs span his presidency, while this was one speech.

This is why so many Obama supporters resist an Obama/Clinton ticket.

In a sign that the general election show down really has begun, John McCain’s biggest backer, George W. Bush is out slinging some mud at Barack Obama. The dust up is over Obama’s willingness to meet with leaders from friendly and unfriendly nations. The President and several McCain surrogates are arguing that this position is comparable to Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler before WWII.

This should add the all important radical-libertarian-constitutional-internet-fringe. I for one think that if we get to a point where Ralph Nader and Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan and Denis Kucinich all agree on Obama’s candidacy then he has to be the guy, or maybe that should disqualify him, (Isn’t this like one of those books that Thich Nhat Hanh writes about how Jesus and the Buddha are really getting at the same thing?)
